We have collected films on the history of space exploration. The exciting conquest of space began in 1957 with the launch of the first “Sputnik”. For the Sputnik we have some film excerpts online. It is not by chance that Soviet Russian technicians succeed in this success. Because the Russian space pioneer Konstantin Ziolkowski dreamed of opening up the cosmos more than 100 years ago. We have collected archive films by Ziolkowski, the rocket designer Sergej Koroljow. And films on the history of the Soviet “Space Firsts”. To the flights of Yuri Gagarin in 1961, Valentina Tereshkova in 1963 or Alexei Leonov in 1965 and 1975, when he flies on the Soyuz-Apollo mission.
And we have films about the American Apollo program. After a difficult start it became successful and in 1969 made possible the sensation of the first landing of a man on the moon. We also have a lot of footage, like these scenes from Apollo IX.
Afterwards it became quieter around the manned space travel. In the 1960s, people had received space travelers with enthusiastic storms in Moscow or New York. In the 1970s, the public lost some of its interest. But step by step, mankind is building a network of satellites. Without them, modern information and communication technology would simply not be possible. And in Russia, engineers are building the Salyut space stations. They are learning more and more about the possibilities of long stays in space. This work eventually culminates in the ISS, which has made great contributions to research possible. And now the moon and Mars are targets again.
